Voodoo Ray's
Britain never built a slice culture, so a counter selling a wedge off a 22 inch New York pie until 2am is filling a hole rather than joining a queue.
Why go
The people behind Dalston Superstore, the queer club a few doors up Kingsland High Street, opened this, and Time Out recorded the link back in 2014 (ref). That lineage explains the room better than any menu description does: concrete walls, wooden benches, white tiles and exposed bulbs, an open kitchen, international beers and frozen margaritas, doors open until 2am on Friday and Saturday (The Nudge, venue). The pizza is New York in reference and shape, sold by the slice or as an 18 or 22 inch pie for the table. The specials board actually moves. In January 2022 a reviewer named a Buffalo Margherita, a Porky's with Cumberland sausage and stilton, a Green Velvet, and an after-midnight Full Moon Slice with bacon dust. In July 2026 not one of them was on the board, which carried cauliflower cheese under crispy onions and rosemary, and roast ham with brie and fig chutney.
Order this / avoid
- Order: a slice, which The Infatuation calls "a very satisfying large snack or small dinner if you need something quick" (ref). Whatever special is up. A frozen margarita alongside it. A whole 22 inch pie if there are four of you.
- Avoid: turning up before 5pm on a weekday, when the doors are shut. Do not come looking for a pizza you read about, because the list has turned over completely since 2022.
What locals & experts say
- Jake Missing, The Infatuation, 14 January 2022, scoring it 7.4: "Slices are £4 a go for the most part and it's a very satisfying large snack or small dinner if you need something quick." He frames the whole venue against a gap, which is that pizza by the slice is uncommon in the UK. ref
- Neil Frame, The Nudge, 7 January 2022, scoring it 7.6 on a scale whose 7 band reads "Good: We liked it", on the pizzas: "all thin crispy bases, lashings of gooey cheese and imaginative toppings." On the room: "concrete walls, wooden benches, white tiles and exposed bulbs of Dalston's late night, laid-back pizza joint." ref
- Time Out London, 17 October 2014, unbylined, on who runs it and what they put on a pizza: "a small but very popular pizzeria in Kingsland High Street, owned by the people behind Dalston Superstore," making "a number of unorthodox toppings, such as chicken skin, confit garlic, squash and spring onions on a cream base." ref
- Two scores in the mid sevens and nothing since. Both published assessments landed in January 2022 and no London outlet has revisited it. That caps how confidently anyone can send you here for the food.
Good to know
- Where: 95 Kingsland High Street, E8 2PB, next to the Rio, a minute from Dalston Kingsland Overground.
- Timing: Monday to Wednesday 5pm to 10pm, Thursday 5pm to 11pm, Friday 5pm to 2am, Saturday 1pm to 2am, Sunday 1pm to 10pm. The weekend 2am finish is the reason this row exists.
- Booking: walk-in for the counter. Whole pies go for collection or delivery through the venue's ordering system, and private events and group bookings are handled separately.
- Hygiene: Food Standards Agency rating 4, inspected 15 August 2025 by the London Borough of Hackney, with no component scores published. That is the band below the top and clear of the failing tier, stated here so it is not a surprise. ref
- Diet: the venue publishes no allergen or dietary statement, so nothing is flagged. Ask at the counter.
- Sites: this row is Dalston. The FSA register also lists Voodoo Ray's premises on Rye Lane in Peckham and inside Escape to Freight Island in Manchester, each with its own record and its own rating. The venue's own home page points only at Dalston, and both reviews cited here are of this room.
- The website: voodoorays.com is the live one. The voodoorays.co.uk address still appears in listings and refuses connections.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: none. Jeff's saved-places export carries an empty Note for this row, so nothing here is attributed to him. The master CSV line about late-night giant slices was written by an earlier enrichment pass.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
could-visit — Go when you are already there, and go late. Britain never really had slice counters, so a room selling a wedge off a 22 inch New York pie at one in the morning is filling a gap rather than joining a queue, and the operators came out of Dalston Superstore, the queer club up the road, which is why the place runs like a nightlife business with an oven in it. Concrete, benches, white tile, an open kitchen, international beer and frozen margaritas, doors until 2am on Friday and Saturday. The board moves: not one of the four pizzas a reviewer named in January 2022 is still on it, and July 2026 was cauliflower cheese with crispy onions and rosemary, and roast ham with brie and fig chutney. Two London outlets scored it 7.4 and 7.6 within two months of each other, which is good and not more than good, and nobody has assessed it since. The hygiene rating is a 4 from August 2025, which is fine and is not a 5. So this is the slice on the way home rather than the reason to cross town, and on those terms it is one of the few places in London that can do it.
