Dalston Levantine open-fire save

Jeff's note

Oren

A pitta packed with hake and grilled in lamb fat, which the London editor of The Infatuation called one of the best things you can eat in the city (The Infatuation).

Why go

Oded Oren cooked at Louie Louie and then ran a string of residencies around London before he took the room on Shacklewell Lane where Floyd's used to be. It opened in October 2019. His own description of the food is "inspired from my home (in Tel Aviv) and the Mediterranean using local and sustainable produce", and the mechanism is a charcoal grill with a low-intervention wine list bought from small growers next to it (Oren).

In February 2026 Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, one of thirteen new London Bibs that year (Hot Dinners). A Bib landing this edition counts for more than one somebody has held for a decade.

The room is small. Counter seats at the bar, a few tables, candlelight, and enough proximity that when one phone vibrates everybody checks their pockets. The menu runs to around eighteen plates and it is built for sharing, which is the one thing to get right before you book.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: the arayes, then ox cheek and hummus, which the kitchen has run since it opened. The whole braised cabbage if you want to see what the grill does to a vegetable. Amba chicken thighs with toum. Start with the stone-baked flatbread.
  • Avoid: coming as two people and expecting to cover the menu. Do not turn up without a table booked. The Hackney Gazette's reviewer found the burnt aubergine mushy and called it the low point of her meal.

What locals & experts say

  • Jake Missing, The Infatuation London, May 2022, 8.5: "Arayes, a pitta stuffed with hake before being grilled in lamb fat, is one of the best things you can eat in London." On the vegetables: "An entire braised cabbage, a vegetable often reduced to the flavourless sibling of the whole cauliflower, is a revelation." And the practical note: "Oren is a restaurant that's heaving almost every night, while simultaneously being slept on." ref
  • Janine Rasiah, Hackney Gazette, December 2019: "The lamb flatbread with baharat spice and yoghurt picked things right back up, with us fighting over who had which piece." Her caveat was blunt: "The burnt aubergine proved to be the only low point of the meal, we were unsure about the mushy texture." ref
  • Catherine Hanly, Hot Dinners, December 2019, on the flatbread in the first week: "on the face of it a very simple dish but here the bread is smoky and wonderfully chewy and god know where they found tomatoes that tasted this good at this time of year." ref
  • Abby Lee, founder of Mambow, naming it among her favourite spots in Hackney for Time Out in October 2020: "It's delicious Mediterranean food, whether you want a sabich to-go or have a full mezze delivered with cured sardines. The food reminds me of being on holiday." She was talking about the lockdown takeaway, which is worth knowing when you read it. ref

Good to know

  • Where: 89 Shacklewell Lane E8 2EB, under ten minutes on foot from Dalston Kingsland.
  • Timing: evenings. Book, because it fills.
  • Seating: counter seats at the bar as well as tables, plus a few outside.
  • The menu: around eighteen plates, built to share. Plates ran from six pounds to just under twenty when Hot Dinners priced them at opening.
  • Diet: a whole section of the short menu is vegetarian and vegan, and three of the five snacks were veggie at opening.
  • Wine: low intervention, bought from small growers, and priced as punchily as it tastes.
  • Sites: two, and they are different things. This row is the restaurant at 89 Shacklewell Lane. Oren Delicatessen opened in London Fields in February 2023 at 6C Ada Street E8 4QU, has its own website and its own hygiene record, and nothing on this page comes from it.
  • Michelin: Bib Gourmand, new in the 2026 guide, announced 3 February 2026.
  • Hygiene: the FSA holds this premises at 5, rated 13 March 2025, under Hackney. FHRSID 470241. The deli is rated 4 and that rating belongs to the deli.

Jeff's take (his words)

  • Note: none. His saved-places export carries an empty note against this row, so nothing here is attributed to him. The master CSV line "Dalston Levantine open-fire save" is a curation label rather than his words, and the open-fire half of it is accurate.

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

must-visit — Plan an evening around it, and bring more than one other person. Oded Oren cooked at Louie Louie and ran residencies around London before opening his first permanent room on Shacklewell Lane in October 2019, with a charcoal grill at the centre of it and a low-intervention wine list bought from small growers. In February 2026 Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, one of thirteen new London Bibs that year, which under our own rules counts harder than a Bib somebody has been sitting on since 2015. The Infatuation's Jake Missing scored it 8.5 and wrote that the arayes, a pitta packed with hake and grilled in lamb fat, 'is one of the best things you can eat in London', and that a whole braised cabbage here is a revelation. Abby Lee of Mambow picks it too. The practical intelligence matters as much as the praise: the menu runs to eighteen or so plates built for sharing, the room is small enough that one phone buzzing makes everybody check their pockets, and it is full most nights, so book. Confidence is high because a Bib, an 8.5, two opening-week bylined reviews and a chef pick all say the same thing.

Order

  • Arayes, pitta packed with hake and grilled in lamb fat, which a London editor called one of the best things you can eat in the city
  • Ox cheek and hummus, the dish the kitchen has been running since it opened
  • The whole braised cabbage, which is the argument for coming here as a vegetarian
  • Grilled amba chicken thighs with toum, off the charcoal
  • Stone-baked flatbread with tomato and olive oil, smoky and chewy, to start with
  • Something off the low-intervention list, which is bought from small growers and is as punchy as the food

Good to know

  • Booking: essential
  • Timing: dinner-only, bookings-essential
  • Best for: dinner, date, solo, groups-ok, big-night
  • Avoid: Coming as a couple and treating it as a date. The menu runs to eighteen or so plates and it wants a table that can eat them; Turning up without a booking. The room is tiny and it is full most nights; The burnt aubergine, if texture matters to you. The Hackney Gazette found it mushy and called it the low point
  • Expert picks: Jake Missing, Janine Rasiah, Catherine Hanly, Abby Lee
  • Dietary: vegan-options, vegetarian-friendly (per venue statements; confirm for medical needs)

Oren (venue site, read 1 August 2026)

FIRST-PARTY, short and load-bearing. Verbatim: 'Opened in October 2019, Oren is a neighbourhood restaurant-bar located on Shacklewell Lane in Dalston. Serving Mediterranean inspired sharing plates from a charcoal grill and low intervention wines from small growers.' And the sibling, stated by the venue itself: 'In February 2023 we opened our Delicatessen in London Fields, for more info please visit www.orendeli.com.' That single line is what makes the branch discipline on this row possible. The site also carries a hiring banner, which is a live-trading signal in itself

  2. [2]
Hot Dinners (Gavin Hanly, 3 February 2026)

THE BIB GOURMAND, confirmed by name inside an enumerated list rather than inferred: 'This year, there's a bumper crop of 13 new Bib Gourmands in London. Here are the 2026 Bibs... Oren (Dalston), Eastern Mediterranean restaurant from Oded Oren.' The piece also records how Michelin defines the award, 'restaurants offering excellent value for the quality of their cooking', and notes that the guide stopped defining what it means by great value. The other twelve include Gina in Chingford and Calong in Stoke Newington. THIS IS A NEW BIB, not a retained one, which is why first_year is 2026

  3. [3]
The Infatuation London (Jake Missing, 31 May 2022, 8.5)

THE FULLEST ASSESSMENT OF THE FOOD. On what happens mid-meal: 'the reason you're going to pause at Oren is because you've just eaten something meal-stoppingly delicious. It could be ox cheek and hummus. It could be grilled salsify with laben kashk.' THE CAREER-DISH LINE: 'Arayes, a pitta stuffed with hake before being grilled in lamb fat, is one of the best things you can eat in London.' On the braised cabbage: 'An entire braised cabbage, a vegetable often reduced to the flavourless sibling of the whole cauliflower, is a revelation.' On the chicken: 'Grilled amba chicken thighs with toum are ludicrously juicy.' On the wine: 'Given the confidence with which ingredients are treated here... it should be no surprise that Oren's low-intervention wine list is similarly punchy, in both price and flavour.' THE PRACTICAL WARNING, and it is unusual: the menu runs to 'a big and made for sharing' 18 or so dishes, so a candlelit date 'fits in every way apart from one', and he advises booking because 'Oren is a restaurant that's heaving almost every night, while simultaneously being slept on.' On the size: 'if one person's phone vibrates here, everyone checks their pockets'

  4. [4]
Hot Dinners (Catherine Hanly, 3 December 2019)

THE OPENING TEST DRIVE, and the source for the chef's trajectory and the room. Oded Oren 'has been quietly building the fanbase for his cooking while at Louie Louie and then in a series of residencies across town. Now he's set up a permanent home here in the spot where Floyd's used to be.' The chef's own description of the food: 'inspired from my home (in Tel Aviv) and the Mediterranean using local and sustainable produce.' Seating: 'take your pick from either counter seating up at the bar or at one of the other tables.' Prices at opening: small and large plates from GBP 6 to GBP 19.80. On the vegetarian side: 'On a short menu, a whole section is devoted to vegetarian and vegan dishes, and three of the five snacks were veggie too.' Dishes named: stone baked flatbread with tomato and olive oil, burnt aubergine with Mount Gerizim tahini, lamb sweetbreads with za'atar and lemon, wild hake kebab, and 'one of their signature dishes, ox cheek and hummus'. Nearest station Dalston Kingsland, under ten minutes on foot

Hackney Gazette (Janine Rasiah, 3 December 2019)

BOROUGH-PAPER REVIEW, bylined, and it carries the criticism. Verbatim: 'The burnt aubergine proved to be the only low point of the meal, we were unsure about the mushy texture.' The positive: 'the lamb flatbread with baharat spice and yoghurt picked things right back up, with us fighting over who had which piece.' Also the monkfish in Libyan chraime, 'simple but effective', and grilled potatoes with coriander and lemon that 'more than held their own'. Her verdict: 'It's unusual not to have a clear favourite, but I'll be back for both, and a fair bit of the rest of the menu too.' SECONDHAND AND NOT CLAIMED: she writes 'It's easy to see why Jay Rayner was blown away by the pop-up residencies which preceded it', which is her characterising Rayner rather than Rayner speaking, and no Rayner endorsement is written from it. ODDITY: this page carries the same misfired USA Today and 'The Herald' boilerplate seen on the Dusty Knuckle piece from the same publisher
