Hot-coal Persian kababs save

Jeff's note

Berenjak Soho

Come as four. The counter faces a charcoal grill with one cook on bread at one end and another on a rotating spit, and the ordering only makes sense at that size.

Why go

Kian Samyani cooked at Gymkhana and Brigadiers before he opened this in October 2018, backed by JKS, and within a year it had a Michelin Bib Gourmand, announced by the group itself under the headline "Berenjak Soho wins a Michelin Bib Gourmand" (JKS Restaurants). The model is a Tehran hole in the wall, rebuilt from scratch: Time Out's line is that "it's taken a lot of money to make Berenjak look this shabby-chic" (Time Out). What matters is what the money bought, which is a tandoor and a charcoal grill working in the open with the bread made in front of you.

Rianne Shlebak ate across every Persian restaurant in London for The Infatuation's category guide and came back here: 8.7, and "Berenjak is simply the best" (The Infatuation). The counterweight is in the Harden's survey, which reports the group hitting "growing pains" as it expands, "with a slight slip in ratings and a couple of mixed reports" (Harden's).

Sites: three in London. This row is the original, 27 Romilly Street, W1D 5AL. The others are Berenjak Borough, 1 Bedale Street SE1 9AL, and the 2025 Mayfair room at 80 Duke Street, W1K 6JG. The brand also runs three sites in the Gulf and one at Soho House Brooklyn. Nothing written here is evidence about any of them.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: a lot of dips first, and the black truffle olivieh among them. Then koobideh, which The Infatuation rates as "the most tender koobideh out there. It's buttery, it's light, and we could eat two of these minced lamb shoulder skewers by ourselves (don't share)" ref. Barreh kabab tond for the lamb rump. Zereshk over the plain saffron rice, because the barberries cut the butter.
  • Avoid: the chicken if the lamb is on, coming as a pair, and expecting to walk in.

What locals & experts say

  • Rianne Shlebak, The Infatuation, 8.7, 5 March 2026, having just eaten the whole category: "after eating our way through London's Persian restaurants, we can confirm: Berenjak is simply the best." On the room, which is the practical part: "The counter's fun, but come as four. Two people can't order responsibly here." ref
  • Tania Ballantine, Time Out, four stars, 18 December 2023: "Berenjak is one of those joints Soho can't have too many of... with very good food, eager-to-please staff, and a bill that won't kill." She names the kit: "a chap making bread for the tandoor at one end, and another at a rotating spit." ref
  • Harden's survey reporters, with the dissent that decides the rung: "while most reports say everything is delicious, some growing pains were in evidence this year, with a slight slip in ratings and a couple of mixed reports." One diner is blunter about the branch trade-off: "The London Bridge branch is better than Soho for ambience and space." ref
  • Four chefs have praised Berenjak and none of them said which one. Nieves Barragán Mohacho, Shaun Searley and Hasan Semay all name the brand with no address, and Xavier Bramble's pick is for the Borough room. Under branch discipline none of those supports this door, so none is counted here. It is worth knowing they exist.

Jeff's take (his words)

Jeff saved this row with no note. His export Note is empty, so nothing here is attributed to him, and the line on the master list came from an enrichment pass.

Good to know

  • Where: 27 Romilly Street, W1D 5AL, between Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.
  • Booking: essential, and genuinely hard. The Infatuation files it among the toughest reservations in London and the advice is to refresh the page.
  • Party size: four. The back room is built around tables of four and the ordering assumes it.
  • Price: around GBP 90 for two with drinks and service when Time Out costed it in December 2023. Wine from GBP 32, service 12.5 per cent.
  • Hours: the venue's own site could not be reached by either fetch route on 1 August 2026, so the only current listing is Harden's, which has it opening at 5.30pm on Monday. Check before travelling.
  • Hygiene: FSA rating 5, FHRSID 560389, inspected 14 February 2025, Westminster. ref
  • Michelin: Bib Gourmand, awarded to this site in 2019 per the operator's own announcement. The current edition was not checked in this pass.

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

should-visit — Kian Samyani opened this room in October 2018 after Gymkhana and Brigadiers, and it took a Michelin Bib Gourmand within a year, announced by JKS under the headline 'Berenjak Soho wins a Michelin Bib Gourmand'. The cooking is charcoal and a tandoor worked in front of you: one cook on bread at one end of the pass, another on a rotating spit, sourdough flatbread coming off to eat with the dips. Rianne Shlebak scored it 8.7 for The Infatuation after eating through every Persian restaurant in London for a guide and concluded 'Berenjak is simply the best'. Tania Ballantine gave it four stars and about GBP 90 for two. What holds it at a detour rather than a trip is the shape of the rest of the evidence. Harden's most recent survey reports the group hitting growing pains as it spreads to Borough, Mayfair, the Gulf and Brooklyn, with 'a slight slip in ratings and a couple of mixed reports'. And every chef in London's vote graph who has praised Berenjak named the brand rather than a door, so the strongest evidence class we hold cannot be spent on this address. Come as four. The room does not work for two.

Order

  • Koobideh kabab, minced lamb shoulder, and order two per person rather than sharing
  • Barreh kabab tond, lamb rump marinated in chilli and yoghurt until it eats like mince
  • Black truffle olivieh, which is the salad olivieh with the volume turned up
  • Hummus with taftoon straight off the tandoor
  • House rice with zereshk, the sour barberries cutting all that butter

Good to know

  • Booking: essential
  • Timing: dinner-only, open-late, bookings-essential
  • Best for: dinner, date, groups-ok, solo
  • Avoid: Coming as two. The room is built for a table of four and the ordering only works at that size; Turning up without a table. Bookings here are among the hardest in London; Sunday, when the room is dark
  • Expert picks: Rianne Shlebak, Tania Ballantine

    The Infatuation (Rianne Shlebak)

'At Berenjak, the hype is deserved', scored 8.7 out of 10, dated 5 March 2026, by the Infatuation's Senior Staff Writer in London. BRANCH-PINNED: names 27 Romilly Street and separates the sites in its own text, 'We first reviewed it in 2018 when it opened, and since then it's expanded to Borough, plus six other cities. Yet getting a table at this original Soho spot still feels near-impossible.' The verdict, written after eating across the category for their Persian guide: 'after eating our way through London's Persian restaurants, we can confirm: Berenjak is simply the best.' On booking: 'They know a 7pm booking requires stamina, strategy, and a minor miracle... The trick? Refresh, refresh, and refresh again.' On the room and how to use it: 'Inside, it's tiny. Intimate, if we're being polite. A few tables of four in the back, that are never empty for long, a couple of booths, and a tight counter facing the open kitchen where kebabs fly at impressive speeds. The counter's fun, but come as four. Two people can't order responsibly here.' Ordering: 'Start with a borderline reckless number of dips: black truffle olivieh, thick nutty hummus, mast o khiar... Add kababs (the lamb is better than the chicken) and opt for zereshk over your saffron rice.' Dish notes: the koobideh is 'the most tender koobideh out there. It's buttery, it's light, and we could eat two of these minced lamb shoulder skewers by ourselves (don't share)'; the barreh kabab tond is 'lamb rump chunks so soft you'll want to double check if they're mince. They're not. They're just marinated in chilli and yoghurt'; the jujeh is 'nice and citrussy, but it's the lamb you should focus on'; the zereshk rice adds 'little dried red berries' that 'cut through all the meats very nicely'. Filed in their guides to counter dining, Soho, Persian restaurants and the toughest reservations in London. The page's data block gives postcode W1D 5DH, which is wrong against the FSA and Time Out

    Time Out London (Tania Ballantine)

Venue review, four stars out of five, tagged Recommended, price band two of four, 18 December 2023. BRANCH-PINNED: filed under Soho, address 27 Romilly St, London W1D 5AL. On the room: 'the ultra-bijou front room, just a few booths flanking a kitchen counter, leads through to a (slightly) larger back room. This, with its cracked plaster walls, exotic foliage and rug-covered tiled floor, could have been lifted from a backstreet in Tehran. But it is a built-from-scratch London-ified version: it's taken a lot of money to make Berenjak look this shabby-chic.' On the people and the kit: 'that money has come from the JKS group, the team who brought us Bao and Hoppers, among others. The head chef is Iranian-born Kian Samyani, who has previously worked at the group's more grown-up powerhouses, Gymkhana and Brigadiers. Here, he's running the... open kitchen, where there's a chap making bread for the tandoor at one end, and another at a rotating spit.' On the food: 'Take the poussin: the charred, blackened edges offsetting its chilli, red pepper, sumac and garlic marinade. Think of it as a juicier, smokier, tangier take on tandoori baby chicken. Also great were salty, moreish morsels of broken eggs, or a bowl of stewed guinea fowl, its thin saffron-laced gravy studded with baby potatoes and sour barberries.' The verdict: 'Berenjak is one of those joints Soho can't have too many of... with very good food, eager-to-please staff, and a bill that won't kill.' Dinner for two with drinks and service given as around GBP 90 in December 2023

    Harden's

Listing read 1 August 2026. The group's footprint, which is the sibling table: Kian Samyani's operation, 'backed by JKS Restaurants, has now spread to three outlets in the Gulf and Soho House in Brooklyn, as well as its London operations in Soho, Borough and, open in 2025, in a new development next to the Barley Mow on Duke Street in Mayfair.' The praise: 'Sensational kebabs of exceptional, freshly grilled breads and meat inspire ongoing rave reviews'; and on the Soho room specifically, 'Kian Samyani (backed by JKS Restaurants) channels his Iranian heritage at this friendly Soho charcoal grill to deliver terrifically tasty kebabs grilled over the coals, with sourdough tandoori flat breads that are perfect for dunking in any of their truly moreish dips', with 'it's fun to sit at the bar and watch the action'. The counter-evidence, which is the operator-motive risk showing up in the data: 'while most reports say everything is delicious, some growing pains were in evidence this year, with a slight slip in ratings and a couple of mixed reports (the menu looks balanced and execution was carefully thought of... some dishes were outstanding while some very disappointing).' A diner review carries the branch comparison: 'The London Bridge branch is better than Soho for ambience and space.' Prices: wine from GBP 32, service 12.5 per cent. Hours as listed: Monday 5.30 to 11pm

    JKS Restaurants (operator, own announcement)

Dated 9 October 2019 and headed 'Berenjak Soho wins a Michelin Bib Gourmand'. Full text: 'We're proud to announce another Bib Gourmand for Berenjak in Soho - inspired by classic backstreet hole-in-the-wall restaurants that line the streets of Tehran.' This is the first-party, site-specific record of the award. The group's own venue page states its scale: 'Founded in 2008, and currently operating 15 restaurants in Central London and 5 Indian home delivery kitchens. Our philosophy is based on an attitude of restless innovation, boundary pushing and spontaneity'
