Wee Lochan Kitchen
The Wee Lochan traded on Crow Road in Broomhill for ten years and closed in 2020, and the head chef who had cooked it for nine of them reopened the food in a twenty-seat room on Dumbarton Road (Scotsman Food and Drink).
Why go
It opened on a daytime card of breakfast rolls, croque monsieur and Cullen skink and then added a dinner service, which is the opposite order to how most restaurants grow (Rosalind Erskine). The nine years show up as a menu that does not hedge: four or five things per course, Scottish produce, and French sauce work underneath. Hot smoked salmon comes with sauce gribiche, an egg-and-caper emulsion that has to be made fresh and separates if it is not, and there is a poached shellfish bouillabaisse at GBP 17. There is no alcohol licence, so you bring the bottle and pay corkage. The room seats about twenty, which is the single fact that governs everything else about eating here.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the Stornoway black pudding at GBP 7, with red onion marmalade, a poached egg and pancetta, which is the dish Erskine led on and the clearest read on the kitchen's seasoning. Then the seafood bouillabaisse at GBP 17.
- Avoid: counting on the pancetta. Erskine found it "crumbled completely so was more like bacon flavoured sprinkles." ref
What locals & experts say
- Rosalind Erskine, Scotsman Food and Drink (30 July 2023), on the succession: "Wee Lochan Kitchen isn't exactly the Wee Lochan, but the food will transport you right back there and it's that familiarity that will keep people coming back for more sold out dinners." She scored it ambiance 6.5/10, food 7/10. ref
- The same review, on the dessert: an apple and custard tart "was lacking a crust but then I'd probably had enough pastry," which is a critic marking her own card as much as the kitchen's. ref
- Coverage gap, stated plainly: both pieces above are by the same writer in the same month of 2023, and nothing has been published about this room since. Current trading rests on the hygiene inspection below rather than on any review.
- Food hygiene, checked: Pass, inspected 20 March 2026. ref
- Local rec: Jeff's save says Broomhill, which is where the original was. REAL, and a compression rather than a mistake.
Good to know
- Timing: breakfast and brunch through lunch, with a dinner service added after opening.
- Booking: essential for dinner. Twenty covers against sold-out dinners is not a walk-in proposition.
- Price: the black pudding and the smoked salmon ran GBP 7 each, the tart of the day GBP 13 and the bouillabaisse GBP 17, all as listed in 2023. Nothing more current has been published, so treat them as direction.
- BYOB: no alcohol is served, and corkage applies. The amount is not published anywhere reachable.
- Where it is: Whiteinch, on Dumbarton Road, past Broomhill and short of Scotstoun. The master row said West End and has been corrected.
- Groups: it will not take one. Twenty seats total.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Broomhill Scottish kitchen save"
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
should-visit — The Wee Lochan ran on Crow Road in Broomhill for ten years and died in 2020. Its head chef of nine years reopened a twenty-seat room on Dumbarton Road in Whiteinch and put the old food back on the pass, and Rosalind Erskine's verdict was that it 'isn't exactly the Wee Lochan, but the food will transport you right back there'. Seafood bouillabaisse at GBP 17 and Stornoway black pudding at GBP 7 in a BYOB room that seats twenty is a genuine argument for crossing the city. It is not a must-visit because the food scored 7/10 from the one critic who has been, with named faults, and because nothing has been written about it since 2023.
