casual and playful Thai neo-bistro that specializes in flavorful dishes designed for sharing. Their menu features a variety of dishes, including a savory soufflé-like omelette that pairs well with chili sauce, fried baos with braised mushrooms or pork, and a Thai style shrimp ceviche. Likely Michelin star soon.

Jeff's note

Sam Lor

Napol "Joe" Jantraget and Saki Hoshino left 80/20, the Michelin-starred restaurant they built, to open this corner shophouse on Charoen Krung in 2022, and their souffle-style Thai omelette became one of the most photographed plates in Bangkok.

Why go

The name means tricycle, and a traditional one hangs over the corner entrance at Si Phraya. The cooking runs starred-kitchen technique through comfort formats: the omelette is whipped, cooked at high heat, and arrives, per BK Magazine, "as fluffy as a cloud, and once you cut it open, it has a creamy, lava yolk inside." Michelin put Samlor among the 53 Bib Gourmand newcomers of the Thailand 2023 selection and still lists it as a Bib in the 2026 guide. On the star question Jeff raises: no star yet, in any edition through 2026. BK's verdict on the genre: "it's not often we get to enjoy Thai gap glaem with so much style."

Order this / avoid

  • Order: the omelette first; Michelin's inspectors write, "If you're going to order just one thing at this hip little restaurant, make it their omelette - it's delicious." Jeff's additions: the fried baos with braised mushrooms or pork, and the Thai-style shrimp ceviche (goong chae nampla). BK adds the smoked pork ribs and yum pla foo.
  • Avoid: walking in. Dinner runs in two seatings, 6pm and 8pm, booked on TableCheck with a B300-per-person deposit. Closed Tuesday.

What locals & experts say

  • Michelin Guide (Bib Gourmand, Thailand 2023 selection onward): "Samlor means tricycle in Thai and a traditional one hangs outside this cosy corner spot." ref
  • BK Magazine (December 2022): "The prices are affordable and it's not often we get to enjoy Thai gap glaem with so much style." ref
  • Michelin Guide editorial: the couple opened Samlor "after leaving their Michelin-starred restaurant 80/20"; the guide also profiled the omelette in a Behind the Dish feature. ref

Good to know

  • Timing: dinner Wednesday through Monday in two seatings, plus weekend lunch. Closed Tuesday.
  • Booking: essential, via TableCheck, with the B300 deposit; phone 064-210-1520 per BK.
  • From voco Surawong: about 1.2km down Si Phraya toward the river, a 15-minute walk, two blocks past 100 Mahaseth. The two rooms plus Mahaniyom make the Si Phraya corner a full evening.

Jeff's take (his words)

  • The frame: casual and playful Thai neo-bistro that specializes in flavorful dishes designed for sharing.
  • Order: a savory soufflé-like omelette that pairs well with chili sauce, fried baos with braised mushrooms or pork, and a Thai style shrimp ceviche.
  • The call: Likely Michelin star soon.

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

should-visit — A chef who held a Michelin star at 80/20 walked away to cook gap glaem sharing plates, and the result carries a Bib Gourmand from the 2023 selection onward plus Michelin's own advice that the omelette alone justifies the trip. The souffle omelette is a genuine signature with technique behind it, the room is casual, and it sits a short walk from the hotel. A star may come, as Jeff predicts, but the rung rests on what is already on the plate.

Order

  • Souffle-style Thai omelette, with crab if offered
  • Goong chae nampla (Thai-style shrimp ceviche)
  • Fried baos with braised mushrooms or pork (Jeff's order)
  • Smoked pork ribs
  • Yum pla foo
