East of Everything

Melbourne's century-old dry zones meant a new pub in these suburbs had to be voted in by local residents, so almost none ever were. This bar is named for the beer desert that left behind.

Why go

Michael and Gen Cotter opened the cocktail bar Bar None in 2004 because, in his words, "I grew up in Camberwell and I was kind of sick of going into the city to enjoy places like Supper Club and Gin Palace" (The Crafty Pint). A fire gutted the three-storey building in 2012 and they turned the top floor into a craft-beer bar, naming it for how fast good beer ran out a few kilometers east of the city. Broadsheet counts about twenty bottles, five rotating taps and one for cider, and notes that Genevieve came up in wine, which shows in the list (Broadsheet). The family now runs three venues in the one building, with the dive bar and bottle shop Rosalita's sitting between the other two.

Order this / avoid

• Order: whatever went on the taps most recently, and use the cider line if it appeals, since it is a dedicated tap. The wine is worth asking about. Food comes from the family's Louisiana kitchens, so a po' boy travels well with a beer.
• Avoid: looking for signage. The street entrance is an unmarked blue door and a staircase with worn carpet.

could-visit — Worth an hour if you are already in the east, which is exactly the point of the name. Melbourne's dry zones meant new pubs in these suburbs had to be voted in by local residents and so never got built, and siblings Michael and Gen Cotter opened Bar None in 2004 because, as Michael puts it, he was sick of going into the city to drink. After a fire gutted the three-storey building they turned the top floor into a craft-beer bar and called it East of Everything, a joke about how fast good beer ran out a few kilometers from town. Five rotating taps and a dedicated cider line sit alongside about twenty bottles, and the wine list is real because one of the owners came up in wine. Find the unmarked blue door and the worn staircase. It holds at could-visit because the beer list is small by the standards of the venues above it, nobody has reviewed it, and neither its address nor its hours are published anywhere we can verify.
