The Dusty Knuckle Harringay
The business started in a forty-foot shipping container in Dalston and exists to put at-risk young people through on-the-job training, which is what the bread pays for (Hackney Gazette).
Why go
This is the second of two sites and the only one on Green Lanes. It opened on 31 July 2021 in the room that used to be Yaalu, about midway between Manor House and Turnpike Lane (Hot Dinners). Potato sourdough, sandwiches built on bread from that morning, soups and salads, and a weekend breakfast board with egg, pickled chilli, spring onion and cheddar on focaccia.
Then there is the oven. They put a wood-fired pizza oven into a bakery and run it Thursday to Saturday evenings, when the cafe becomes a pizza and wine room. The nduja on one of the pizzas is made in house and comes with honey.
In January 2024 the industry title British Baker named the business in its Bakers' Dozen, thirteen artisan bakeries across the whole UK, announced at its Artisan Collective event. Amy North, the title's editor, described the list as bakeries "recognised by industry experts and their peers as a beacon of dedication, passion, and skill" (Hackney Gazette).
Order this / avoid
- Order: the egg, chilli and cheese focaccia, which is the one thing anyone has published about eating at this specific counter. Potato sourdough to take away. On a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, the nduja and honey pizza.
- Avoid: arriving on a Tuesday wanting pizza. The oven runs three nights and no others. Do not bring a review of the Dalston room here either, since the hours, the queue and the inspection record all belong to that address.
What locals & experts say
- Jordan Bassett, Time Out London, October 2024, on this site: "The first Dusty Knuckle bakery launched in Dalston in 2014 and was such a lip-smacking hit that this Green Lanes cafe and restaurant followed in 2021. Once you've tried their fiery egg, chilli and cheese focaccia, you'll see why industry body British Baker named them one of the UK's top artisan bakers." ref
- Catherine Hanly, Hot Dinners, July 2021, announcing the opening: "They'll be selling their amazing potato sourdough and other baked goods along with top class sarnies, soups and salads. But they'll also be opening it as a pizza restaurant, three nights a week, serving pizza from their wood-fired oven." She was reporting the news rather than reviewing the food. Co-founder Max, in the same piece: "It's been a 24/7 labour of love and we really hope that the people of Haringey love their new bakery." ref
- The chef vote that is not counted here. Patrick Powell of Knave of Clubs told TOPJAW in September 2025 that the best bakery in London is "the Dusty Knuckle. Great viennoiserie. Best baguettes in London. And what wonderful people." He does not say which of the two sites, so it is recorded and left off this row rather than borrowed.
Good to know
- Where: 429 Green Lanes N4 1HA, on the Harringay Ladder, between Manor House and Turnpike Lane.
- Timing: a day bakery and cafe. The wood oven runs Thursday to Saturday evenings only. Current opening hours were not published anywhere reached, so check before a long trip.
- Booking: walk in.
- Sites: two, and only two. This one at 429 Green Lanes N4 1HA, and the original at Abbot Street Car Park, Dalston E8 3DP, which also runs a baking school. A 1984 milk float tours Walthamstow, Leyton, Homerton, Hackney Wick, Bow, Angel, Clissold Park and Highbury.
- The training programme: the business runs on-the-job training and mentorship for young people who face barriers to employment, and merchandise sales fund it.
- Hygiene: the FSA holds this premises at 5, rated 23 September 2025, under Haringey. FHRSID 1369969. The Dalston site is a separate record, FHRSID 719737, rated 4 in February 2025 by Hackney, and that rating belongs to that address.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: none. His saved-places export carries an empty note against this row, so nothing here is attributed to him. The master CSV line "Branch of the Dalston bakery" is a curation label rather than his words, and it is accurate: this is the second site, and the row is scoped to it.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
should-visit — Worth the detour if you are anywhere on the Harringay Ladder, and worth knowing why the business exists. The Dusty Knuckle started in a forty-foot shipping container in Dalston, and the whole operation runs as on-the-job training and mentorship for young people facing barriers to work. This site opened on 31 July 2021 in the space that used to be Yaalu, midway between Manor House and Turnpike Lane, and it does two things. By day it is a bakery and cafe: potato sourdough, loaded sandwiches on bread baked that morning, and the egg, chilli and cheese focaccia that Time Out's Jordan Bassett singles out at this address. Thursday to Saturday nights the wood-fired oven comes on and it turns into a pizzeria, with house nduja and honey on one of them. In January 2024 British Baker put the business in its Bakers' Dozen, thirteen artisan bakeries for the whole UK, and the Hackney Gazette named both cafes in reporting it. Held at should-visit rather than higher because nobody has reviewed the cooking at this counter, and the strongest chef quote about the brand names no branch, so it stays off this row.
