Tasty Jerk
Four steel oil drums smoke behind the counter, which is what gives the pork belly crisp skin, rendered fat and chew in the same bite.
Why go
This is the Whitehorse Lane original in South Norwood, on the edge of Selhurst Park, and it is the one the critics mean. Chicken legs and pork belly come off the drum rig and get cleaved into hand-sized pieces at the counter, then paired with the house scotch bonnet sauce. Time Out has listed the site since May 2012. It is a takeaway with no dining room, so the food is built to travel and to be eaten with your hands. The scotch bonnet sauce is hot enough that The Infatuation's advice on it is "Get two pots." ref
Order this / avoid
- Order: the jerk pork belly, then a chicken leg, then festival and rice and peas. Melissa Thompson's read on the pork is that "the fat is so beautifully soft and the meat has got a really lovely chew to it." ref
- Avoid: the wrong Tasty Jerk. An unrelated business of the same name trades at 15B Sayer Street in Elephant Park, run by Linda Johnson and chef Rayon, with its own history at East Street Market and no connection to Whitehorse Lane. ref
What locals & experts say
- Melissa Thompson, barbecue cook and food writer, in Time Out (4 July 2024): "I love Maureen's, but Original Tasty Jerk probably is my favourite jerk pork. Outside of Jamaica it's the best jerk pork I've ever had." She also warns it is a place where "there's always a queue and it's always really busy." ref
- The Infatuation (Jake Missing, 11 September 2024, 9.1): "Tasty Jerk is a smoking temple of jerk worship." On the counter: "Thud, thud, thud. That's the sound of your chicken, straight from the grill, being cleaved into hand-sized pieces for you to devour." ref
- The Infatuation, best jerk spots guide: it "makes the most consistently charred, moist, and fruity jerk chicken in the city." ref
- Vittles: the magazine's "Six Underrated Dishes at Well-Known London Restaurants" promises "the thing more people should order at Tasty Jerk, by Gavin Cleaver." That piece is behind the paywall, so the dish itself is not known here. ref
- Local rec: Jeff's row records it as multiple recommendations from food people. REAL.
Good to know
- Address: 88 Whitehorse Lane, South Norwood SE25 6RQ, next to Selhurst Park and a large Sainsbury's. Norwood Junction and Selhurst are the closest stations.
- Timing: hours could not be verified from any source. Thompson's account is that there is always a queue, so build in the wait.
- Format: takeaway counter. There is nowhere to sit, and the food is meant to be eaten in the car or on the street.
- Hygiene: FSA record 946647, rating 4 under Croydon, inspected 19 October 2025. Hygienic food handling and confidence in management both scored in the best band. Cleanliness and condition of the building scored 10, which the register reads as improvement necessary.
- Dietary: nothing published. No venue statement was reachable, so ask at the counter.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Multiple foodie recs" REAL. The recs check out. Melissa Thompson and The Infatuation both put this at the top of the category, and the row's saved suburb was wrong, so the pin to trust is SE25 6RQ.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
must-visit — Four steel oil drums behind the counter, running long enough and hot enough to give the pork belly crisp skin, soft fat and chew all at once. Melissa Thompson, who cooks barbecue and writes about Jamaican food, calls it the best jerk pork she has eaten outside Jamaica. The Infatuation scored it 9.1 and called the jerk chicken the most consistently charred, moist and fruity in London. Two experts putting one dish at the top of a citywide category is a craft argument, not a hype argument, and it is worth the trip to SE25. Go for the pork, take two pots of the scotch bonnet sauce, and expect a queue.
