SlowBurn
The restaurant only exists at weekends, because Monday to Friday the room is a working denim factory and the tables are in storage (Waltham Forest Guardian).
Why go
Chavdar Todorov started SlowBurn in November 2020, delivering food around E17 on a motorbike during lockdown, and he now cooks out of the kitchen at the back of Blackhorse Lane Ateliers (The Nudge). The atelier makes selvedge jeans all week. At about 4pm on a Friday the machines stop, the tables come out, and roughly 25 to 30 covers get set up between the workbenches (City AM).
Vegetables lead and meat plays a supporting part, which the Good Food Guide read as "a good-value, vegetable-led menu tuned to the seasons" (Good Food Guide). You can watch that rotation happen: of everything City AM ate in July 2023 and everything Time Out ate in November 2025, one dish appears on both lists.
The buying is specific. Fosse Meadows free-range chicken, St Austell bay mussels, Pitchfork cheddar, Wild Grains sourdough. Todorov gives the chicken a spicy rub and smokes it, and gives the roast baby potatoes the same treatment.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the black bean gyoza tacos, which have run since the first week, and the smoked chicken by the quarter if you are sharing widely. Charred sweet potato on cavolo nero chimichurri, and whichever brassica is in, because that is where the seasonal cooking shows.
- Avoid: the octopus, marked down as overcooked inside a four-star review. Any plan that involves eating here on a weekday.
What locals & experts say
- Leonie Cooper, Time Out London, November 2025, 4 out of 5 and Recommended: "This isn't tweezer-tastic fine dining, but great, semi-chaotic things on a plate that comfort and coddle as well as surprise and shock." She also wrote the sentence this entry treats as the honest caveat: "a somewhat overcooked octopus with pak choi". ref
- Steve Dinneen, City AM, July 2023: "There's some really, really great cooking on display at SlowBurn, unflashy and without frills, as you would expect of a kitchen borrowed from an atelier." His dish of the night was "lamb shoulder in a sea of neon green: peas, kohlrabi, confit shallots and wild garlic. A real belter of a dish." ref
- The Good Food Guide, Britain's 100 Best Local Restaurants 2025: "Depth of flavour and proper savouriness are chef/owner Chavdar Todorov's calling cards", and the smoked chicken was "almost impossibly moist and definitely worthy of the name". The review carries no byline, so this is the Guide's verdict rather than a critic's. ref
- No industry vote. None of the 589 London picks in our chef-vote file names SlowBurn, which is worth saying plainly about a restaurant this well reviewed.
Good to know
- Where: 114b Blackhorse Lane, Walthamstow E17 6AA. Blackhorse Road station, then a walk past warehouses. Diners regularly spend five to ten minutes finding the door.
- Timing: Friday evening, then lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday. Closed Monday to Thursday.
- Booking: essential, through the site. City AM's line in 2023 was "getting a table is difficult, book in advance", and the room has not got bigger since.
- Value: the lunchtime spread runs GBP 26 a head, and there are by-the-glass wines under GBP 10.
- Dietary: the venue says "most of our dishes are vegetarian and vegan-friendly". It makes no gluten-free or celiac claim, so treat that as unknown.
- Drink: a short wine list, spritzes and cocktails. Nobody comes here for the bar.
- Hygiene: FSA rating 5, Waltham Forest, inspected 19 September 2025, FHRSID 1300836.
- Sites: one. A different pop-up, Denim N' Dine, used this address back in 2016 under another chef; no connection.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: none. His saved-places export carries an empty note against this row, so nothing is put in his mouth. The master CSV line "Weekend pop-up inside the Blackhorse Lane jeans atelier" is enrichment text from an earlier pass, and it is accurate.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
should-visit — Worth rearranging a weekend for, and it has to be a weekend. SlowBurn cooks out of the kitchen at the back of Blackhorse Lane Ateliers, a working denim factory, and it only opens once the sewing stops on Friday afternoon. Chavdar Todorov has run it since November 2020, when it was a lockdown takeaway he delivered by motorbike, and the cooking now is vegetable-first with meat in a supporting role: black bean tacos built on crisp gyoza skins, charred sweet potato under cavolo nero chimichurri, a spice-rubbed smoked chicken the Good Food Guide called 'almost impossibly moist'. Leonie Cooper gave it four stars in Time Out and Steve Dinneen called the cooking 'really, really great' in City AM, and the Guide put it in Britain's 100 Best Local Restaurants for 2025. It stops short of the top rung for two reasons stated in the evidence itself: the same four-star review marks an overcooked octopus, and there is no dish here you could not eat somewhere else in London. What you cannot get elsewhere is this room, and the room is weighed after the plate.
