Lahore Kebab House
There is no bar in here because the bring-your-own is free, the off-licence is directly opposite, and when the card machine died on a reviewer's fifth visit the restaurant's answer was the free cash machine set into its own front window.
Why go
Umberston Street runs off Commercial Road and this has been on it for more than fifty years, which Harden's respondents describe as "a real staple of the East End curry fraternity" (Harden's). The grill is the reason: lamb chops that successive survey editions single out, dry lamb that one respondent calls the best they have had, tandoori chicken, and a mango lassi built on Alphonso so it tastes of fruit rather than sugar. It runs noon to 1am seven days a week, takes walk-ins, and expects you to bring the drink. The Infatuation's Jake Missing frames the whole thing usefully: if the queue at Tayyabs is longer than you can face, this is where you go (The Infatuation).
Order this / avoid
- Order: the lamb chops. Dry lamb. Keema, which on Hector's 2024 visit had a whole potato hiding in it and spice sitting right on the edge of too hot. Methi gosht if you want the peppery, herb-heavy end. A mango lassi.
- Avoid: the fish curry, which the same reviewer found soupy and disappointing in 2021 and again in 2024. Arriving without a bottle. Expecting anyone to make a fuss of you.
What locals & experts say
- Hector, Curry-Heute, on his fifth visit, in a piece titled "Maybe, hit and miss, But Still Has It": "Far from being outstanding, this was simply comfort eating. By the end, the palate was in a very happy place, more Methi might have clinched it. Still, here was authentic, Desi Cuisine." He noted the lamb in the methi gosht was "quite chewy" and the food "never more than warm", then added the restaurant to his recommended list on the strength of the tally. ref
- Jake Missing, editorial lead at The Infatuation London: "This big Pakistani grill serves up kebabs and curries in a straightforward, no frills, canteen-like setting. It's an institution for excellent value group meals." Their score sits in the 7 band. ref
- Harden's survey respondents, across four editions, agreeing with each other and with themselves: "For over 30 years I've been turning up here and it always delivers"; "the best curry in town... if you are prepared to forgive the service and ambiance"; "as cheap and consistent as ever (and as grotty...)"; "Still the best authentic Pakistani grilled meat and curry." Their standing tip is one line: "don't forget to bring your own bottle!" ref
Good to know
- Where: 2-4 Umberston Street, Whitechapel E1 1PY, off Commercial Road, a few minutes from Tayyabs.
- Hours: noon to 1am, seven days, per Harden's listing.
- Booking: walk in. Queues build at weekends.
- Drink: free BYO, with an off-licence directly opposite. There is no bar.
- Money: cheap, and cash has been needed before. There is a free cash machine in the front window.
- Sites: one. The only other Lahore Kebab House on the UK food-hygiene register is in Northern Ireland and unconnected.
- Hygiene: rating 4, inspected 26 November 2025, Tower Hamlets. That is a pass, and it is the lowest rating among the twelve venues in this curation batch, so it is worth knowing rather than glossing ref.
- Halal: the meat is halal as a Pakistani grill, though the kitchen's own statement was not obtained, so treat the flag as likely rather than confirmed.
Jeff's take (his words)
Nothing from Jeff. The saved-places export carries this row with an empty Note column, so jeff_note stays empty.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
should-visit — Worth the detour for one specific evening: six people, a table, a bottle from the off-licence across the road, and lamb chops off the grill until one in the morning. The value is what punches up here. Harden's respondents have been calling it cheap and consistent across four editions and half a century, one of them saying it is the best curry in town if you are prepared to forgive the service and the room, and there is no bar inside because the BYO is free. Hector has now eaten here five times and his 2024 write-up is the honest one: the keema was back to its best with an unannounced potato in it and spice right on the edge, and the methi gosht arrived with chewy lamb and no more than warm. He called it far from outstanding, simply comfort eating, and then added the place to his recommended list anyway, which is exactly the right verdict on it. The Infatuation puts it in their 7 band and frames it as where you go when the queue at Tayyabs is too long. So: the cooking is good rather than great, the room is grotty by universal agreement, and the combination of price, hours and the fact that you carry your own drink in makes it a genuinely useful London answer. The hygiene rating is a 4 from November 2025, which is a pass and the lowest in this batch.
