70 Atlantic Road

70 Atlantic Road (the Putney shop is a separate site). Six lines on an empty-keg rule, all crowler-fillable, 500+ in the fridges, 4,100 distinct beers logged on Untappd. Card only. Opened Dec 2016

Jeff's note

Ghost Whale

Every one of the six taps here cans straight into a 500ml crowler that is purged with gas before it is filled, so the draft list walks out of the shop with you, and a beer only comes off a line when the keg dies.

Why go

The buying is the whole business. Untappd's verified venue page for the Brixton shop logs 4,100 distinct beers against 86,879 check-ins with 778 in the last month, which is a shop rebuilding its list constantly rather than restocking the same forty cans (Untappd, read 1 August 2026). The fridges hold over 500 beers and the taps run on the venue's own stated rule: "Once a keg runs out, something new goes on" (Ghost Whale). Behind that sits an events programme with names on it, single-brewery evenings with Brujos and Finback in August 2026 and a three-day Funk Week in September, which is a buyer with relationships rather than a wholesaler's order sheet. It opened on 15 December 2016 in a former hairdresser called Tidy Hair, with four taps and 300 beers, so the range has grown by half in a decade (Brixton Buzz).

Order this / avoid

  • Order: whatever is on the six lines, then can it. A crowler off any tap or a growler off taps one to four both go home with you. The funk and sour end of the fridge is where their own tastings keep landing.
  • Avoid: turning up with cash, which neither shop takes. Early in the week, since the doors do not open until 4pm on Monday and Tuesday. Confusing this with Putney, which keeps its own stock and only opens Wednesday to Saturday.

What locals & experts say

  • Fred Waltman, London Beer Guide: "Another of the rapidly proliferating breed of bottle shop bars, Ghost Whale is one of the best so far in London." He puts the count at about six drafts and 400 bottles and adds that "the selection is really excellent. Top place." ref
  • Jason Allen, The Nudge: "Pop in on any given day, and you can settle in for a pour from one of the half-dozen, ever-rotating taps at that bar." He counts over 500 beers in the fridges and names Brixton as the flagship. ref
  • CAMRA's South West London branch, surveying in 2017: "Independent Craft Beer shop and bar opened in January 2017 in former hairdressers. Four keg taps and an evolving stock list of over 300 different beers and ciders." The same page records no real ale, so nobody should come here for cask. ref

Good to know

  • Sites: two. This row is Brixton, 70 Atlantic Road SW9 8PX, open daily. The sibling is Putney, 134 Upper Richmond Road SW15 2SP, open Wednesday to Saturday only, with its own stock and its own FSA record. Nothing here describes Putney.
  • Where: a minute from Brixton station, on the market side of the railway arches.
  • Hours: Monday 4 to 8, Tuesday 4 to 9, Wednesday 4 to 11, Thursday to Saturday 12 to 11, Sunday 12 to 8.
  • Payment: card only, including the tap.
  • Takeaway: 500ml crowlers off all six taps, one litre growlers off taps one to four, and a separate online shop for cans and bottles.
  • Tenure: the leasehold is Ghost Whale Ltd and the freehold is Notting Hill Genesis, and CAMRA lists the site as an Asset of Community Value.
  • Hygiene: rating 5, inspected 5 June 2026, Lambeth ref.

Jeff's take (his words)

Nothing from Jeff. The saved-places export carries this row with an empty Note column, so jeff_note stays empty.

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

should-visit — For beer, this is worth crossing town for, and the case is in the numbers rather than the room. Six lines that only change when a keg dies have put 4,100 distinct beers through a verified Untappd venue page against 86,879 check-ins, with 778 logged in the last month, so the turnover is real and current rather than a claim on a chalkboard. Every one of those taps cans into a crowler that is gas-purged before filling, which means the draft list leaves with you instead of dying in the glass, and taps one to four also run growlers. Fred Waltman's London Beer Guide calls it one of the best of its breed in the city and says the selection is really excellent. The events calendar is the tell that somebody is actually buying: single-brewery evenings with Brujos and Finback, and a three-day funk and sour festival in September. It is a shop with a table in it, so the room does nothing for you, and the range sits below the biggest importer taprooms in London. That is why it stops at worth the detour.

Order

  • Whatever is on the six lines, since a keg going empty is the only reason a new beer goes on
  • A 500ml crowler canned off the tap and purged with gas before filling, which is how the tap beer travels home
  • A one litre growler fill from taps one to four
  • Something from the funk and sour end of the fridge, which is what their own tasting events keep going back to

Good to know

  • Booking: walk-in
  • Timing: closes-early
  • Best for: drinks, solo, quick
  • Avoid: Bringing cash. Both shops are card only; Monday and Tuesday if you want to sit in, since the doors open at 4pm and Monday shuts at 8; Assuming this is the Putney shop. Their two sites keep separate stock and separate hours
