Chantelle Nicholson's low-waste dining room; green Michelin star

Jeff's note

Apricity Restaurant

Michelin awarded four Green Stars in the whole of Great Britain and Ireland in the 2023 guide, and Chantelle Nicholson took one of them less than a year after opening this room on Duke Street.

Why go

Nicholson ran Tredwells before this, and Apricity is her low-waste, hyper-seasonal restaurant with the menu balance turned around: British vegetables lead, and regeneratively farmed meat and sustainably caught fish sit alongside them (Harden's). One Harden's reporter puts the effect precisely: "there was no need to order any meat or fish: the vegetarian and vegan dishes we had were spectacular!" The room follows the same logic, plaster walls and bare tables, with the fit-out rebuilt from what was already there. The Caterer's report on the 2023 Green Stars puts Apricity alongside Crocadon, Culture and Osip, which is the entire British cohort for that year.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: the wasted dip that opens the meal, which is built from trim the kitchen would otherwise lose. Then the mushrooms, which is the one dish Harden's reporters keep naming (Harden's). Take the vegetable menu as the main event rather than the alternative.
  • Avoid: coming for a Mayfair meat dinner. And know the early criticism before you book: Jimi Famurewa wrote in the Standard that it "occasionally feels like it loses sight of fun and basic diner enjoyment."

What locals & experts say

  • Grace Dent, The Guardian, on the cooking: "too good and truly delicious." ref
  • Jimi Famurewa, Evening Standard, the dissent from the same season: it "occasionally feels like it loses sight of fun and basic diner enjoyment." ref
  • Harden's diners' survey, most recent round: "Lovely little restaurant that champions veg without excluding carnivores, and focuses on sustainability without being preachy," with "exceptionally creative food, thoughtful presentation and knowledgeable staff." The single menu tip attached to it: "ooh, the mushrooms." ref
  • Caroline Baldwin, The Caterer (27 March 2023), reporting the award: "Recipients of the Michelin green star included Chantelle Nicholson's Apricity in London and Crocadon, Dan Cox' restaurant located on a 120-acre organic farm in Cornwall." ref

Good to know

  • Where: 68 Duke Street, Mayfair W1K 6JU, between Bond Street and Marble Arch.
  • Diet: the menu leads on vegetables and reporters eat vegan here by choice rather than by exception. Nothing stronger is claimed, since no venue statement on cross-contamination was reached.
  • Booking: advisable. Current hours are not recorded here, because they were not established from the venue's own channel.
  • Michelin: Green Star, Great Britain and Ireland 2023, sourced to trade coverage rather than to the guide, which this project does not fetch. Whether it is still held is not established, and the local guide cache covers stars only.
  • Hygiene: FSA rating 5, inspected 19 March 2026, with confidence in management scoring a clean zero. ref

Jeff's take (his words)

Nothing. His saved-places export carries an empty Note for this row, checked against london/data/_src-part3.csv. The master CSV's "Chantelle Nicholson's low-waste dining room; green Michelin star" line came from an enrichment pass. Both halves check out, and the Green Star was re-established from The Caterer's bylined report rather than repeated on trust.

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

should-visit — Worth the detour if you want to see what a kitchen looks like when the vegetables are the argument rather than the concession. Chantelle Nicholson, who used to run Tredwells, opened this in April 2022 with the menu balance inverted: British veg leads, regeneratively farmed meat and line-caught fish sit alongside, and the room is built from what the last one left behind. Michelin gave it a Green Star in the Great Britain and Ireland 2023 guide, one of only four awarded that year, less than twelve months after it opened. The reason it stays off the top rung is that the room divided people early and the split was about pleasure rather than principle: Grace Dent found it truly delicious and Jimi Famurewa found it losing sight of basic diner enjoyment in the same season. Harden's reporters have since come round, and their one repeated instruction is the mushrooms.

Order

  • The wasted dip to start, built from what the kitchen would otherwise throw
  • The mushrooms, which is the one dish everyone who eats here comes back to
  • The vegetable tasting menu, which is the main event here rather than the alternative
  • Regeneratively farmed meat or line-caught fish if you want it, ordered as the side of the menu it actually is

Good to know

  • Booking: recommended
  • Timing: lunch, dinner
  • Best for: lunch, dinner, date, vegetarian, big-night
  • Avoid: Coming for a big meaty blowout. The balance of this menu is the other way round from most Mayfair rooms; Expecting fireworks on the plate. More than one critic has found it earnest before they found it fun
  • Expert picks: Grace Dent, Caroline Baldwin
  • Dietary: vegetarian-friendly, vegan-options (per venue statements; confirm for medical needs)

Caroline Baldwin, The Caterer (27 March 2023)

the citable record for the Green Star, since the guide itself is off-limits to this project's fetchers. Four Green Stars were newly awarded in the Great Britain and Ireland Guide 2023: Apricity in London (Chantelle Nicholson), Crocadon in St Mellion (Dan Cox), Culture in Falmouth (Hylton Espey) and Osip in Somerset (Merlin Labron-Johnson). The ceremony was at Silverstone, the guide's first in-person UK event in three years. This is trade reporting, not a personal verdict

Harden's (diners' survey, four rounds, 2023 to 2026)

dates the opening to April 2022 and identifies Chantelle Nicholson as the former chef-owner of Tredwells. The rounds move in one direction. The earliest is split: 'exceptional plant-based dishes' to some, 'not a lot of flair or flavour' to others, and it records that the press reviewers split too, with The Guardian's Grace Dent calling it 'too good and truly delicious' while The Evening Standard's Jimi Famurewa found it 'occasionally feels like it loses sight of fun and basic diner enjoyment'. A later round: 'there was no need to order any meat or fish: the vegetarian and vegan dishes we had were spectacular!' The most recent: 'Lovely little restaurant that champions veg without excluding carnivores, and focuses on sustainability without being preachy... exceptionally creative food, thoughtful presentation and knowledgeable staff' and a 'fantastic less-waste' ethos. Top Menu Tip: 'ooh, the mushrooms'. Also records that the menu leads on British veg with regeneratively farmed meat and sustainably caught fish alongside, and that the room is plaster walls and bare tables
