Michelin two star Chinese fine dining

Jeff's note

A. Wong

Andrew Wong turned his parents' Victoria restaurant into the first Chinese restaurant outside Asia to hold two Michelin stars, awarded in 2021 on the site where he grew up working. The A in the name stands for Albert and Annie, his parents.

Why go

Wong left a chemistry place at Oxford, finished in social anthropology at LSE, and has been a research associate at the SOAS Food Studies Centre since May 2021 (The Staff Canteen). That research is the kitchen's method: with anthropologist Dr Mukta Das he works from ancient recipes, poetry and academic texts to rebuild regional Chinese dishes most restaurants have never heard of (Great British Chefs). It lands on the plate as things like an inside-out Shanghai xiao long bao carrying its ginger-infused vinegar with it, and a Peking duck course built as a memory of the dish rather than a copy.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: dinner is The Collections of China, 235 pounds, dozens of small dishes crossing China's regions, with a vegetarian version at the same price (venue site, 2026). Lunch is the value play: a la carte dim sum, the only service where you can order dishes individually (Time Out).
  • Avoid: planning a visit between August 18 and September 26, 2026. The Pimlico room closes for a refresh while the team cooks a dinner-only residency at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair; the home site reopens September 29.

What locals & experts say

  • Time Out London (2025): a 5/5 from editor-in-chief Joe Mackertich: "Consistently present at A Wong is evidence of boundary-breaking imagination," concluding the food "couldn't exist anywhere else on Earth." ref
  • MICHELIN (2021, scope): two stars, making it the first Chinese restaurant outside Asia to hold them, retained since. ref

Good to know

  • Timing: dinner Tuesday, lunch and dinner Wednesday to Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday (venue site, 2026).
  • Booking: essential, via the venue's SevenRooms page; the tasting menu books out well ahead.
  • Dietary: the venue's own line, verbatim: "We can cater for food intolerances however due to the nature of some of our dried and fermented ingredients, we are unable to cater for allergies." A full vegetarian tasting menu exists; serious allergies should look elsewhere.
  • Neighborhood: 70 Wilton Rd, a five-minute walk from Victoria station; the venue itself says Pimlico.

Jeff's take (his words)

  • Note: "Michelin two star Chinese fine dining." REAL.

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

must-visit — Two Michelin stars since 2021, the first Chinese restaurant outside Asia to hold them, and a menu built from academic research into regional cuisines that Time Out says 'couldn't exist anywhere else on Earth.' Craft, marquee award and genuine singularity all point the same way; the only planning constraint is the six-week Mayfair residency window in late 2026.

Order

  • The Collections of China tasting menu, which also runs in a vegetarian version
  • Shanghai xiao long bao, dipped in the ginger-infused vinegar
  • Dim sum a la carte, which only happens at lunch
  • Memories of Peking duck

  • Timing: closed-sun, closed-mon, bookings-essential

  • Avoid: Planning a visit between 18 August and 26 September 2026. The Pimlico room is shut for a refresh while the team runs a residency at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair
