Naked Soup
The drinks license here arrived during lockdown, after the two brothers who run the place spent it in Barcelona, Berlin and southern Spain working out what Glasgow was missing.
Why go
Josh and Daniel took over an existing breakfast counter, kept the name, and kept the format of morning rolls, breakfast and lunch sandwiches until Covid shut the doors (Thomson's Coffee journal). They describe the shutdown as the best thing that happened to the business, because grants bought them the time to rethink it. What they came back with was a day cafe that turns into a bar, and the reason is a gap they noticed abroad. "There are coffee shops, but you go to the pub for a beer, and there's kind of no one between," they told Thomson's. Thomson's roasts the coffee. The look of the place, down to the branding, comes from an illustrator in New Zealand the pair have never met, a friend of a friend of a former member of staff, worked out over DMs across years. On top of the regular trade they run pop-up supper clubs, and in May 2024 they gave the room over to Auld Hag, Gregg Boyd's London-based Scottish food project, for a night of macaroni pies, black pudding and I.J Mellis cheese (Homes & Interiors Scotland).
Order this / avoid
- Order: soup, which is what the name promises and what the day menu is built on, with a Thomson's coffee. In the evening, drink. No dish here can be named from a source we will cite, since the soup names and the drinks list only appear in listings we do not use, so read the board.
- Avoid: arriving expecting brunch. The owners are blunt about the register, calling the food "not the most glamorous stuff, it's not your brunch and your avocado and your poached egg." Also check before an evening visit, because the hours could not be confirmed and the bar side may run on event nights.
What locals & experts say
- Josh and Daniel, the owners, to Thomson's Coffee (February 2024), on what the room is for: "The ambience and the feeling you get when you come into a place, it's so vital to us." They add, "You see people holding shazam up to the speakers and that's kinda cool." ref
- The same interview, on the pandemic: "I know a lot of people don't see it, but it was the best thing that happened to us." ref
- Homes & Interiors Scotland (Adrianne Webster, May 2024), on the Auld Hag takeover night: "Expect pies, pints and good music," with the musician Bessa playing and no bookings taken. ref
- Where the owners eat: they name Celentano's, "the food is fantastic," with Big Counter next on their list. ref
- Local rec: Jeff's save, his note below. REAL.
Good to know
- Hours are unverified. No source we can reach publishes them. The venue's own domain resolves but fails its TLS handshake, and the day-to-evening split could not be pinned. The 2024 Auld Hag night started at 5pm on a Sunday. Phone 0141 334 8999.
- Booking: walk-in. The pop-up nights have been first come, first served.
- Size: small, by the owners' own description, which is part of why it works and why a group is a stretch.
- Getting there: Kersland Street runs off Great Western Road, a short walk from Hillhead subway.
- Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme rates the address a Pass, inspected 30 April 2024. ref

- Note: "Soup lunch save"
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
should-visit — Worth the detour on the strength of who sends people here. Three independent Glasgow operators name it in the industry guide, which is exactly the evidence this entry was missing: no critic had judged it and no dish could be sourced by name. Practitioner word-of-mouth sits second only to Jeff in the evidence hierarchy (docs/RANKING.md), and three separate interests naming one room is the strongest non-Jeff signal available. Note the category correction that came with the votes: all three describe an evening bar, not the soup-and-cafe framing the entry carried.
