One of the best cocktail bars in the UK in the middle of the hip 'Bungo' area. Worth a trek. Don't miss the gelato next door as well

Jeff's note

Lunar Wine & Cocktail Bar

The cocktail list is rebuilt on the lunar cycle, so the drink you liked last month is gone and the seasonal ingredient behind it has moved on too.

Why go

Jehad Hatu built Grunting Growler into a West End beer shop with a reputation for sourcing, then opened Lunar on Nithsdale Road in late 2022 with natural wine on one side and a rotating cocktail program on the other (The Scotsman). The Top 50 Cocktail Bars listing describes a range that runs "rich and chocolatey to smoky, bitter and complex to tart and tropical," with drinks starting at £7 and no bookings taken (Top 50 Cocktail Bars). Rosalind Erskine gave the room and the snacks 7 out of 10 each and found the sours properly built rather than sweetened.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: whatever is running on the current cycle, and ask what the seasonal ingredient is before you pick. Erskine's benchmark was a special called Like a Kid in a Candy Shop, "a well balanced sweet and sour drink" that tasted "for all the world like fizzy cola cubes" ref. Get the habas fritas alongside, the roasted salted broad beans she called "crispy, salty and exactly what you want and need when enjoying a cocktail or two."
  • Avoid: treating it as a dinner stop. The kitchen is a jar of olives and a bowl of beans, so eat on Nithsdale Road first and come here after.

What locals & experts say

  • The Scotsman (Rosalind Erskine, 2023), 7/10 for food and ambiance: the menus change "with the lunar cycle" and the sour she tested tasted "for all the world like fizzy cola cubes." ref
  • Top 50 Cocktail Bars (UK listing): "Experiment with flavour at this quirky new addition to Glasgow's streets." The page carries no ranked position, so treat it as inclusion rather than a placement. ref
  • Local rec: Jeff's save, his note below, including the gelato next door. REAL.

Good to know

  • Timing: an evening bar, open late. Check the Maps pin for exact hours and days.
  • Booking: walk in. The Top 50 listing records walk-ins only, and the room is small enough that a group should arrive early.
  • Getting there: Nithsdale Road in Strathbungo, a few minutes from Pollokshields East and Queen's Park stations. It is a deliberate trip from the city centre, which is what Jeff means by worth a trek.

Craft signals (cocktails: a monthly rebuild)

Two signals for the cadence, both already sourced above. The Scotsman's December 2023 review records menus that change with the lunar cycle around seasonal ingredients, which is a monthly rebuild rather than a seasonal refresh, and it is why the drink names in that review are already historical. The UK Top 50 listing independently describes seasonal cocktails alongside a natural wine list. A bar that throws its list away twelve times a year is doing the work; the small room and the snacks-only kitchen are what hold the rung where it is.

Jeff's take (his words)

  • Note: "One of the best cocktail bars in the UK in the middle of the hip 'Bungo' area. Worth a trek. Don't miss the gelato next door as well"

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

should-visit — Worth the trip south for a bar doing something specific. The list is rebuilt on the lunar cycle around seasonal ingredients, the wine side is natural rather than decorative, and it is the second venture from the person who built Grunting Growler, so the sourcing instinct is proven. The Scotsman scored the room and the snacks 7/10 each and described a cola-cube-accurate sour, which is a made drink rather than a poured one. It stops short of must-visit because the food is bar snacks, the room is small, and the only UK-level credential found is an unranked top-50 listing.

Order

  • Whatever the current lunar-cycle menu is running
  • Over the Smoke
  • Fir and Frost
  • The pickleback, if you want the bar-snack version of the joke
  • Habas fritas and a jar of olives alongside

Good to know

  • Booking: walk-in
  • Timing: open-late, no-bookings
  • Best for: drinks, date, solo, big-night
  • Avoid: Coming hungry; the food is olives and fried broad beans, not dinner; Expecting last month's cocktail list, since the menu turns over with the moon
