Koelschip Yard

Favorite beer pub in Glasgow. Exceptional selection and great pub atmosphere. Ranjits across the street is also famous Indian.

Jeff's note

Koelschip Yard

The bar is named for the koelschip, the shallow open vessel lambic brewers use to cool wort overnight and catch wild yeast, and the Strathbungo room drinks to the name: sour-forward taps, small independents only, poured in thirds so you can taste across the board.

Why go

The Skinny counts "14 keg lines and three cask ones" and calls it "one of the widest beer selections you'll find on Glasgow's Southside," stocked exclusively from "small and independent breweries." CAMRA's January 2026 survey has the range running "from Czech lagers to imperial stouts and IPAs" behind an "impressive can and bottle list," with two rotating casks you rarely see elsewhere in the city. Service is built for exploring: the bar pours "1/3 and 2/3s because the focus here is on trying and tasting."

Order this / avoid

  • Order: a flight of thirds across whatever is newest, anchored by a sour; the bar's own tagline is "Power by Sour." ref
  • Avoid: arriving with cash or an appetite. Card only, and the food stops at "a fine selection of salamis, scotch eggs and nuts," per The Skinny. Jeff's fix is across the street, below.

What locals & experts say

  • The Skinny: the bar knows "what it wants to do and does every bit of it really, really well." ref
  • CAMRA (surveyed January 2026): 14 keg taps and changing casks "from breweries across the UK," plus occasional meet-the-brewer events. ref
  • Local rec: Jeff's save, his favorite beer pub in the city. REAL.

Good to know

  • Timing: evening opening on weekdays, from noon on the weekend, to midnight nightly per CAMRA; check the Maps pin before an afternoon visit.
  • Booking: walk-in; groups can email ahead via the site.
  • Getting there: two minutes from Queens Park station on the Strathbungo strip; pair it with dinner over the road.

Jeff's take (his words)

  • Note: "Favorite beer pub in Glasgow. Exceptional selection and great pub atmosphere. Ranjits across the street is also famous Indian."

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

must-visit — Where you send someone who actually cares about beer in Glasgow. The taps change every week, which is the whole point: a buyer deep enough in the craft to keep rebuilding the list rather than settling into a house lineup, and passion you can taste against the city's static handpump pubs. Jeff (first-hand, 2026-07-30): passionate and deep in the craft, a constantly evolving set of taps, this is where I send someone who cares. Under the primacy rule what is in the glass sets the rung, and here it moves every week.

Order

  • Thirds and two-thirds across the 14 keg lines
  • Whatever sour is pouring; the house tagline is 'Power by Sour'
  • A rotating cask rarely seen elsewhere in Glasgow

Good to know

  • Booking: walk-in
  • Timing: open-late
  • Best for: drinks, solo, groups-ok
  • Avoid: Cash; the bar is card payment only; Coming hungry; there is no kitchen, just salamis, scotch eggs and nuts
