Hutchesontown

Morning-roll counter inside the Barras Market at 254 Gallowgate, opened July 2022 by Andy Gemmell of The Gate, in a unit that kept its old red and white tiling. Order Mortons or McGee first, then one of five fillings built with Scottish food outfit That is Yer Dinner. The McIver is a Cubano rebuilt as a Glasgow roll (pork two ways, ham, crackling, gherkins, Swiss cheese, mustard) and is named for Maggie McIver who founded the market. Weekends only, 10 to 4, twenty seats. STATUS UNCERTAIN: nothing published since The Skinny in July 2024, the FSA record has not moved since August 2024 while five neighbouring market units re-registered, and The Gate own site does not mention it. FHIS Improvement Required, 2024-08-25, disclosed per ADR-0022.

Jeff's note

Hutch Glasgow

The roll to ask for is the McIver, a Cubano rebuilt as a Glasgow morning roll and named for Maggie McIver, who founded the market it is sold in.

Why go

Andy Gemmell opened this in July 2022, inside the Barras, on the back of The Gate, the whisky and cocktail bar he runs a short walk up the Gallowgate. The old kitsch red and white tiling stayed (Glasgowist). The build is simple and the order has two steps: pick Mortons or McGee's, then pick one of five fillings put together with Scottish food outfit That's Yer Dinner. Gemmell on why the Gallowgate: "I've been working in the Gallowgate for over six years, I'm still a newcomer, but I quite like that, you have to prove you belong here."

Order this / avoid

  • Order: the McIver. Butter-brushed and pressed, pork two ways, ham, crackling, gherkins, Swiss cheese and mustard. The Captain Birdsaye is panko fish fingers with tartare and romaine, and the falafel roll comes with tahini, pickle and a garlic and chilli sauce.
  • Avoid: planning a trip around it. Nothing has been published about this counter since July 2024 and it may not be trading. Weekdays were never an option anyway.

What locals & experts say

  • Sean Wai Keung, writing for GNAW in The Skinny, July 2024, and this is the last time anybody saw it: Hutch "made their fame through their cubano-inspired twist on a traditional morning roll, aptly named The McIver. With its stack of ham, crackling, gherkins and mustard, I can't help but wonder what Maggie herself would've made of the creation, or whether she would've gone for a crispy or soft roll." ref
  • Paul Trainer, Glasgowist, July 2022, reporting the opening: "The original kitsch red and white tiling has been retained, the backdrop to a glorious new selection of filled morning rolls." That is Trainer covering a launch rather than reviewing the food, and it is treated that way here. ref
  • Andy Gemmell, owner, on what he was after: "I love great pubs for their connection to the community and Glasgow cafes are exactly the same." ref
  • Nothing since. Glasgowist, The Skinny, Glasgow World and The Glasgow Wrap were searched on 30 July 2026 and no mention of Hutch appears after July 2024.

Good to know

  • Where: inside the Barras Market at 254 Gallowgate, G4 0TS, in Calton. The master row says East End, which is true but loose.
  • Timing: weekends only, 10am to 4pm, as it opened. Twenty seats.
  • Status: treat it as uncertain. Five other food units at the same market address have registered or re-registered with the council between February 2024 and June 2026 while this one's record has not moved since August 2024, and The Gate, run by the same owner and demonstrably active, does not mention Hutch on its own site. That is circumstantial and it is the best anyone has.
  • Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme records Improvement Required, the failing tier of the Scottish scheme, from an inspection on 25 August 2024, with no re-inspection recorded in the 23 months since. Stated here rather than left out. ref

Jeff's take (his words)

  • Note: none. His saved row carries no note of his own, so nothing in this entry is in his voice.

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

could-visit — If it is open, it is a good twenty minutes on a Saturday at the Barras. Andy Gemmell, who runs The Gate up the Gallowgate, opened this in July 2022 as a counter built entirely around the Glasgow morning roll, kept the old red and white tiling, and had Scottish food outfit That's Yer Dinner build five fillings. The one worth ordering is the McIver, a Cubano rebuilt as a Glasgow roll, buttered and pressed, with pork two ways, ham, crackling, gherkins, Swiss cheese and mustard, named for Maggie McIver who founded the market it is sold in. Sean Wai Keung wrote about it for GNAW in July 2024 and wondered whether Maggie would have taken a crispy roll or a soft one, which is exactly the right question. The reason it goes no higher is that nobody has published a word about it since, the hygiene register has recorded Improvement Required since August 2024 without a re-inspection, and five neighbouring market units have re-registered in that time while this one has not moved. Check before you walk down.

Order

  • The McIver, a Cubano rebuilt as a Glasgow roll with pork two ways, ham, crackling, gherkins, Swiss cheese and mustard, buttered and pressed
  • The Captain Birdsaye, panko fish fingers with tartare and romaine
  • The falafel roll, with tahini dressing, pickle and a garlic and chilli sauce
  • Say Mortons or McGee's when you order, because the roll is the first decision

Good to know

  • Booking: walk-in
  • Timing: weekends-only, morning-only, closes-early
  • Best for: breakfast, quick, solo, groups-ok
  • Avoid: Making a journey of it without checking first. Nothing has been published about this counter since July 2024 and it may not be trading; Weekdays. It was a weekend counter, 10 to 4, from the day it opened

TYPE 2, expert-local, bylined and dated. The founding record. Hutch opened on the Saturday inside The Barras market from the team behind whisky and cocktail bar The Gate, which had just turned three. The original kitsch red and white tiling was kept. Order Mortons or McGee's first, then one of five combinations built with Scottish food advocates That's Yer Dinner. The McIver is 'a local version of a Cubano with butter brushed and pressed roll filled with pork two ways, ham, crackling, gherkins, Swiss cheese and mustard'; the Captain Birdsaye is panko fish fingers, tartare sauce and romaine; a Middle Eastern roll combines homemade falafel, fresh tahini dressing, salad, pickle with garlic and chilli sauce. Seating for up to 20 and plans for a supper club the following month. OWNER ANDY GEMMELL quoted at length: 'I have been trying to get a cafe around the area for a while, so when the opportunity came to open one in the middle of The Barras I jumped at the chance. I love great pubs for their connection to the community and Glasgow cafes are exactly the same.' And on the Gallowgate: 'I love the area; its history, the people, and its character. I've been working in the Gallowgate for over six years - I'm still a newcomer, but I quite like that, you have to prove you belong here.' This is an ANNOUNCEMENT rather than a review, so it is Trainer's reporting and not his verdict

Improvement Required is the failing tier of the Scottish scheme; at 23 months this is past the ADR-0020 act-first bound, so the venue stays listed with the finding disclosed.
