Espresso studio save

Jeff's note

Godshot studio

A godshot is barista slang for the espresso that comes out perfect by accident, and Sam Amdjadi named the shop after trying to make it happen on purpose.

Why go

Amdjadi came to coffee sideways. His trade is architectural design and restoration (GlasgowWorld), and he spent four years tracking down makers in Japan, South Korea, Hungary, Denmark, France, Norway, Scotland and Mexico before any of this had a shop attached. In 2019 he brought in Lesley Tang, who by the venue's own account "had led a career of seeking perfection in the art of luxury patisserie and worked under some of the best in the field," with training rooted in "a love of Far Eastern flavours, philosophy, and exacting aesthetics." The room opened in June 2021 and runs both disciplines at full effort: beans bought from Three Marks, Bonanza and Friedhats, and Japanese and French pastry baked on site. The objects on the shelves are the same search by another route, which is why Batch Coffee calls it "as much a design destination as a coffee shop" (Batch Coffee). There is also a print magazine in progress with an interview with the Oscar-winning composer Hildur Gudnadottir in it.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: a filter on pour over, and ask which of the three roasters is on. Batch Coffee's July 2026 guide names them: "sourced from some of the best roasters in Europe including Three Marks, Bonanza, and Friedhats" ref. Then take a pastry, since Tang bakes the Japanese and French range in house, and a matcha if you want to see the other half of the counter. Espresso is the house test given what the place is named after.
  • Avoid: running in and out. Batch's advice is to "budget a bit longer than your usual flat white stop." Also avoid arriving hungry for a meal, because the food is patisserie, and avoid a Monday before 10am, the one morning the doors open an hour later than the rest of the week.

What locals & experts say

  • Time Out, World's Coolest Neighbourhoods 2022 (Shawlands, number 11 of 51): the accolade went to the neighborhood, and Time Out's entry names the shop inside it, describing Shawlands as surrounded by "buzzy independent local businesses" such as "French-Japanese patisserie and design shop Godshot Studio" on Pollokshaws Road. ref
  • Batch Coffee (Tom Saxon, July 2026), sixth best cafe in Glasgow: "Godshot Studio is a bit different to the rest of this list, and that is exactly why it deserves a spot on it." ref
  • Sam Amdjadi, on what he wants to build next: his plan for the derelict Tusk nightclub building on Moss Side Road is a co-working space, "a third wave speciality cafe, and an independent cinema that shows the type of films that the main stream cinemas do not." ref
  • The gap, stated: no Glasgow critic has published a visit-based review of the coffee or the pastry. The nearest candidate is The Glasgow Bell's April 2026 bakery ranking by Robbie Armstrong, which is readable only down to number 10 and may place Godshot in its top nine.
  • Local rec: Jeff's save, his note below. REAL.

Good to know

  • Timing: 9am to 5pm Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm on Monday. It shuts early, so this is a morning and afternoon stop.
  • Booking: walk in.
  • Brew: espresso, pour-over filter, cold brew and nitro, with decaf and plant-based milk available.
  • The room: outdoor seating, dogs allowed, wifi, cards taken. It works as a place to sit and read, which is the point of the objects and the magazine.
  • Where: 1143 Pollokshaws Road, on the stretch that runs into Kilmarnock Road at Shawlands Cross. Chawp Pet Noi is a few doors up at 1109.
  • Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme rates the address a Pass, inspected 18 July 2025. ref

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

should-visit — A godshot is what a barista calls the espresso that comes out right by accident, and Sam Amdjadi named the place after chasing it. He came to coffee from architectural design and restoration, spent four years finding makers across eight countries, then in 2019 brought in Lesley Tang, who had spent her career in luxury patisserie with a brief built on Far Eastern flavors and exact aesthetics. Since June 2021 the two of them have run a Shawlands room that pulls beans from Three Marks, Bonanza and Friedhats and bakes Japanese and French pastry in house. Batch Coffee put it sixth in Glasgow in July 2026 and told readers to allow more time than a flat white takes. It falls short of the top rung because no Glasgow critic has assessed the cup or the pastry, and the ceiling on a five-hour trading day is real.

Order

  • A filter brewed on pour over from one of the European roasters they buy from, Three Marks, Bonanza or Friedhats
  • The espresso, since the shop is named after the barista term for the rare perfect shot
  • Lesley Tang's Japanese and French patisserie, baked in house
  • Matcha, which sits alongside the coffee rather than as an afterthought

Good to know

  • Booking: walk-in
  • Timing: morning-only, closes-early, all-day
  • Best for: breakfast, lunch, solo, quick
  • Avoid: Treating it as a takeaway stop; Batch Coffee's read is to 'budget a bit longer than your usual flat white stop'; Coming for a meal. The food is patisserie, not a kitchen menu; Arriving before 10am on a Monday, the one day the doors open an hour later, and any day after 5pm because it closes early
