Angeethi by Sagar Massey
An angeethi is the brazier an Indian household cooks on, and Sagar Massey built his Cardonald dining room around a reworked version of one.
Why go
Massey reached the final of MasterChef: The Professionals, trained in Michelin-starred kitchens, worked with Atul Kochhar and taught in the kitchens at West College Scotland before opening here in June 2025 (Angeethi). MICHELIN added the restaurant to its guide on 26 November 2025 and awarded it a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 Great Britain and Ireland list, announced on 2 February 2026 ahead of the Dublin ceremony (The Caterer). SLTN records that as inside six months of opening, and as the first Bib held by an Indian restaurant in Scotland. The menu runs regional: chaat and small plates, Hyderabadi biryani, and grill work that answers to the name over the door. In July 2026 Massey announced a second restaurant, Kalinga, on West Regent Street.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the chatpati tandoori gobi at GBP 8.50, which is the grill doing what the room is named for. Emma Mykytyn found the cauliflower "much better" than what came before it, with pieces "good-sized" rather than collapsed ref. Finish with gulab jamun at GBP 6.50, which she called "perfect."
- Avoid: the Amritsari machhli fry at GBP 7.50. On the same February 2026 visit it arrived "not as crisp as we would have liked," with the spice sitting on the surface rather than in the fish.
What locals & experts say
- Emma Mykytyn (Glasgow Foodie, 4 Feb 2026) disagrees with the guide about the house dish. Of the Old Delhi murgh makhani at GBP 13.95, she wrote that it tasted like "a tin of tomato sauce with not a hint of fenugreek," and the garlic and coriander naan smelled better than it ate. She rated the room "relaxed and friendly" and the service "attentive and friendly," with no rush between courses. ref
- MICHELIN Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2026, Bib Gourmand, announced 2 February 2026 for four Scottish restaurants: Mara in Aberdeen, Angeethi in Cardonald, and Sebb's and The Clarence in Glasgow. The award marks "good quality, good value cooking," with no fixed price threshold since 2019. ref
- SLTN (20 July 2026), quoting Massey on the city he is expanding into: "Glasgow has a fantastic reputation for Indian cooking, and I'm proud to become part of that story." The same piece places Angeethi's Bib inside six months of opening. ref
Good to know
- Where: 1835 Paisley Road West, Cardonald, out past Ibrox on the south west side. Not a city-centre walk.
- Timing: posted hours run Tuesday and Wednesday from 4pm, Thursday to Sunday from noon, closing at 10pm, with Monday closed. Second-hand, so confirm when booking.
- Booking: take a table. A guide listing in a suburban room of this size fills the weekend.
- Price: starters around GBP 8, mains around GBP 14, naan GBP 3.
- Access: the one published visit recorded no disabled access.
- Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme lists the premises as awaiting inspection, recorded 3 October 2025. No rating yet, and no failing rating. ref
- Provenance: added by curation, not from Jeff's own list.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
should-visit — Sagar Massey opened this in Cardonald in June 2025 and MICHELIN gave it a Bib Gourmand inside six months, which SLTN records as the first for an Indian restaurant in Scotland. The name is the cooking method: an angeethi is a household brazier, and the room is built around a reimagined open grill. Mains sit around GBP 14 and the menu runs regional rather than the Glasgow curry-house standard. The reason it is not higher is that the one detailed independent review found the flagship butter chicken flat, so the kitchen looks strong at the grill and less certain on the gravies.
