Moo Ping Hea Owen Silom
Gaggan Anand pays this push cart to roll up to his restaurant after service and grill a thousand skewers for the team, and in Gourmet Traveller he calls its moo ping "the best in Bangkok by far."
Why go
The cart has stood at the Silom end of Convent Road for over 30 years, and the prep is a full workday before the first sale: Owen's wife starts trimming the pork at 5am, cutting away over a tenth of its weight in hard fat, and the skewers marinate overnight before hitting charcoal. Time Out's read on the result: "The moo ping at Hea Owen's relies on a sweet and tangy jeaw sauce that glazes each slice of pork." A skewer runs about B12.
Order this / avoid
- Order: moo ping by the handful with warm sticky rice, the pairing Time Out prescribes "to balance out the flavors," plus the tamarind dipping sauce.
- Avoid: the mall franchises carrying the name; the cart is the original and the one the chefs mean. Also treat published hours as folklore and check Maps (see below).
What locals & experts say
- Gourmet Traveller (Gaggan Anand): "I'm crazy for the moo ping (grilled pork skewers) from Moo Ping Hea Owen. It's the best in Bangkok by far." ref
- Time Out Bangkok (2019, Phavitch Theeraphong): the cart is the sober-up stop for Silom partygoers, and the original beats the franchises. ref
- The Smart Local Thailand (2023): over 30 years at the cart; grilling from 6am on charcoal chosen for smoke. ref
- Local rec: Jeff's list, from the same Gourmet Traveller piece.
Good to know
- Timing: genuinely contested: Time Out (2019) lists 10:30pm to 3am, The Smart Local (2023) reports a 6am start running deep into the night. Check Maps, and treat late night as the safe bet.
- Booking: it is a cart. Cash, small notes.
- From voco Surawong: short walk; the cart sits where Convent Road meets Silom, by the 7-Eleven.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: gaggan in gourmet traveller - get the Moo Ping (pork skewers); yes!
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
should-visit — Gaggan Anand's on-record best-in-Bangkok pick, a cart he hires to grill at his own restaurant, selling B12 skewers outside a 7-Eleven. Craft (overnight marinade, trimmed neck fat, charcoal) and value are maximal; the rung is capped only because it is a two-item snack stop whose hours you cannot yet trust in print.
